Each year, 15 million babies are born prematurely (before 37 weeks of pregnancy). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), preterm birth and its complications are the leading cause of death of children 5 years old and younger, responsible for 1 million deaths annually. To address this problem, we are producing a noninvasive diagnostic that can assess the probability of preterm birth – when it’s still early enough in the pregnancy to do something about it. With this information, we are empowering mothers-to-be and healthcare workers to monitor and treat pregnancies that exhibit a high risk of ending in preterm birth.
